We all know how important it is to look after your teeth and gums, brushing twice a day, using mouth wash and flossing.
But even if you’re doing all that, it still seems you could be making one big mistake when it comes to your oral health.
A dentist has taken to social media to share one rule about cleaning your teeth that is very important to follow.
Dental Therapist, Anna Peterson, uploaded a video to TikTok explaining to her 39,500 followers on the platform that it’s crucial to always brush before eating breakfast.
This is because doing it the other way around can damage your pearly whites.
Anna explained: “Did you know you shouldn’t brush your teeth after breakfast, always before.
“There’s two reasons for this.
“When you at breakfast your mouth becomes acidic, so what you’re doing when you brush your teeth after breakfast is brushing the acid into the tooth and this wears away the enamel.
“And, brushing before breakfast protects your teeth from anything you’re going to eat.”
Her video has since been viewed over 819,000 times and garnered over 36,000 likes.
Hundreds of people also took the time to comments, sharing their thoughts.
Some were frustrated by the idea as they didn’t want their food to taste “minty”, but others thanked Anna for sharing the top tip.
One person said: “I don’t fancy minty cereal…”
Another replied: “Thanks. I always brush straight away after waking up.”
A third asked: “Why does nobody tell you this? Never ever got told anything about personal care when I was in school.”
Someone else proclaimed: “Not all dentists agree on this. Some dentists say it’s fine as long as you leave 30 mins after eating/drinking.”
A different user who has Invisalign braces pointed out they have to “brush after they eat” before putting their invisalign back in their mouth.
